ALFREDO JAAR, WINNER OF THE 11TH HIROSHIMA ART PRIZE

The 11th Hiroshima Art Prize, awarded by the Japanese city since 1989, has selected the Chilean artist, architect and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar as the winner of 2019. Every three years, the award is given to an artist who has contributed throughout his career with peace construction.

In addition to the mention, Jaar will have an individual exhibition at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. In this way, the Chilean artist is the eleventh winner in the list of artists who have obtained this recognition, behind: Issey Miyake, Robert Rauschenberg, Leon Golub and Nancy Spero, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Daniel Libeskind, Shirin Neshat, Cai Guo Qiang, Yoko Ono, Doris Salcedo and Mona Hatoum.

Known all around the world contemporary scene, Jaar is considered one of the most disruptive and innovative artists of the 21st century. With participations at the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennial and Documenta Kassel -without mentioning the important exhibitions throogh the mosti important art institutions in the world-, the award given to the artist from Santiago justifies the symbolic capital of all his work for contemporary art .

As for the exhibition that will take place at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, it is expected to take place during 2020 with a ceremony in honor to the artist the day before its inauguration.
