EL ARTE DE LA DESOBEDIENCIA AT THE MODERN ART MUSEUM OF BOGOTÁ

In the framework of its 55 years aniversary, the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá (MAMBO) presented on June 14th El arte de la desobediencia (The art of disobedience), an exhibition that seeks to highlight the relevance of art in Colombia. From 1965 to 1984, the exposition represents a modernism rupture period that allowed important transformations in artistic practices.

During those years, the Museum was the epicenter of an artistic movement in the country with emerging proposals from experts all around Colombia. Thus, MAMBO consolidated as an important platform for Colombian artists. Taken as reference points, on the one hand in 1965 an installation was presented at the National University – that at that time belonged to the Museum -, and on the other hand in 1984 it was the last celebration of the Salón de Atenas.

The name of the exhibition, El arte de la desobediencia (The art of disobedience), arises from disobedience and contempt of authority which local artists had assumed as an ironic or provocative game that challenged power in different spheres: state, politics, family, education, sexuality  and religion.

In addition, the exposition will be accompanied by the pedagogical project ¿Es usted moderno? (Are you modern?) Based on questions that generate reflections on the times of Colombian art history and daily life during the second half of the 20th century, the project seeks to address questions such as: What makes us modern? Are we contemporary? New is synonymous with modern? Is this Museum of Modern Art modern? Claudia Hakim, MAMBO director, said: "It is very important to give new life to the Museum's collection with scripts that highlight its history and bring it to the contemporary".

El arte de la desobediencia is curated by María Wills, Carmen María Jaramillo and Sylvia Suárez and will remain in MAMBO until mid-October.
