ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY'S ARTWORK WILL BE EXHIBITED AT EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO OF NEW YORK
At El Museo del Barrio (New York, USA) February brings an unprecedented exhibition of the Chilean visual artist Alejandro Jodorowsky (Tocopilla, 1929). Best known for his filmography, under the curatorship of María Inés Rodríguez Jodorowsky will present at El Museo a series of literary works and visual archives that were never published. In addition, records of his theatrical works and performances made in Paris throughout the 50s within the Panic movement will be exhibited.
Disseminator of the Psychomagic therapeutic technique, prolific filmmaker and author of several comic scripts, Alejandro Jodorowsky can be considered one of the most important Chilean visual artists of the late twentieth century. However, his work outside film production -El Topo (1970), The Holly Mountain (1973), La Danza de la Realidad (2013) and Endless Poetry (2016) are his best-known films- and Dune's ambitious project that took him into fanzine and comic scene, has not left so much of his study. That is why María Inés Rodríguez built JODOROWSKY not only from his film production, but from the complete Chilean artist universe.
In the exhibition his comic strips from the collection Las Fábulas Pánicas will be exhibited, work that Jodorowsky made during his stay in Mexico as a figure within the Latin American avant-garde; all his film production; Tarot readings -discipline in which he dabbled a lot- by Jodorowsky himself; and the premiere of his most recent film -Psychomagic: A Healing Art (2018) - at El Teatro de El Museo del Barrio, recently restored.
JODOROWSKY opens on February 28th and is the first exhibition in a US museum for his work. Under Rodríguez curatorship, this is not only an experience founded on Jodorowsky's mysticism, but also the artist's complete work put on display as never seen before.
About María Inés Rodríguez
María Inés Rodríguez, Guest Curator of Jodorowsky at El Museo del Barrio, was formerly director of CAPC Musée d’art Contemporain of Bordeaux in France from February 2014 to August 2018. Prior to this, she held the position of chief curator at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City between 2011 and 2013, working on exhibitions and research projects that explored the appropriation of public space in art, design, education, architecture, and urbanism. From 2009 to 2011 she was chief curator at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y Léon (MUSAC) in Spain. Throughout her career, she has worked on major projects and exhibitions with such significant artists as Alejandro Jodorowsky, Beatriz Gonzalez, Danh Vo, and Teresa Margolles, among others. Rodriguez has been awarded the following grants: Fondation Patiño – Ville de Genève, American Center Foundation, Apex Art Center and Davidoff Arts Initiative.
