THE NEW NARRATIVES OF INTERACTIVE CONTEMPORARY ART FACE CONVENTIONAL ART PRODUCTIONS

By Matías Helbig

On January 30th at Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma (Palma de Mallorca), the most developed artistic productions in the contemporary scene will share a room with traditional artworks by world and historically recognized artists. FACESA dialogue between the Es Baluard Collection and the Beep Electronic Art Collection takes place within the museum's exhibition project which consists of linking, collaborating and coexisting its collection with other public and private collections. Being 2019 the year of its fifteenth anniversary, Es Baluard invited the Beep Electronic Art Collection to celebrate what will be the most relevant exhibition of the year in the museum.

The exhibition will be held on the Main Floor of the Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma. Under the curatorship of Roberta Bosco and Stefano Caldana, the two collections gathered will be exposed to an unusual dialogue. "The objective is to offer a creative and participatory story inviting the public to interact and maintain an active attitude or, rather, interactive, facing works that share a single thread: the theme of the portrait," the curators wrote in the curatorial text that will accompany the exhibition.

Facing contemporary advanced productions of interactive electronic art such as the works of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (1967, Mexico City) or the contemporary mysticism of Evru (Zush) (1946, Barcelona) with artists such as Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) or Antonio Saura (1930-1998), FACES proposes a follow-up on the development and evolution of expressive forms and artistic practices. "The exhibition aims to establish a dialogue between works in different formats. The dialogues - the curators stated in their text - can arise from common interpretations, similarities, subliminal analogies or just alluded to that can push the public towards a creative reading of the works. We aspire to break the immovable fourth wall between the public of contemporary art accustomed to touch electronic works of art and make them perceive other nuances of reading in traditional works ". Likewise, this historical-constructive reading of art will make it possible to identify the similarities between the more conventional modern and contemporary art with the more interactive and avant-garde contemporary art, on the one hand, and the influence of the first over the second, on the other.

Conceived as a long-term temporary exhibition, FACES. A dialogue between the Es Baluard Collection and the Beep Electronic Art Collection will open on January 30th, the 15th anniversary of the museum, and will remain there until September 29, 2019. For sure, a must on the 2019 art agenda.
