MICHAEL SMITH THINKS ABOUT THE CORPORATE CULTURE ASPIRATIONS AT THE JUMEX MUSEUM

Tomorrow at the Jumex Museum, the North American artist Michael Smith presents ¡Imagina la vista desde aquí! (¡Imagine the view from here!), an exhibition that represents aging, failure and enthusiasm based on the aspirational construction of corporate and institutional culture.

MICHAEL SMITH THINKS ABOUT THE CORPORATE CULTURE ASPIRATIONS AT THE JUMEX MUSEUM

Under Kit Hammonds curatorship, the project exhibited at the Mexican museum consists of an installation and a videoart. Starring the artist’s alter ego "Mike”, Smith's video reflects on the confusion between the failure and enthusiasm of an individual inserted into the corporate world. "We observed Mike considering the possibility of buying a 'shared time with curatorial services', announced by the International Association of Commerce and Enrichment," they explain from the Jumex Museum.

As for the installation, this includes How to Curate Your Own Group Exhibition, 1996 artwork, an infomercial that reflects the professionalism and popularity of contemporary art, as well as the growing recognition of curators within of culture.

In this way, Michael Smith’s work constantly questions labor world, "the integral nature of business and culture" and the passive participation of the individual within these spheres. Tinted with irony, parody and disappointment ¡Imagina la vista desde aquí! it’s, above all, a critique of the dominant institutional forms.

The exhibition opens tomorrow, December 8, and will remain exhibited in the Gallery 1 of the Jumex Museum, in Mexico City, until March 3rd, 2019.
