ANA GALLARDO WINS THE SECOND JULIUS BAER ART PRIZE FOR LATIN AMERICAN FEMALE ARTISTS

Julius Baer Group, together with the Bogotá Museum of Moder Art (MAMBO) anaunced that Ana Gallardo is the winner of the second edition of the Julius Baer Art Prize for Latin American Female Artists. It is the first prize of its kind to be held in Latin America.

The prize’s mission is to honor the work of Latin American female artists for their innovations, research and influences in contemporary art. It also offers funds to develop a new and ambitious project that will be exhibited in the Julius Baer Room in MAMBO during July 2023.

This new edition of the Prize offers a reflection on several themes, such as Latin American Art and the features that distinguish it from other artistic currents in the world. It also focuses on the contributions of Latin American women to contemporary art and promotes de visibility of women artists in the region. Besides, the award presents a vision of the recurring discourses, concepts and concerns of women artists in the region. The objective is to address the intersection between gender, nationalities and territorialities that impregnate cultural and artistic productions.

Ana Gallardo (Argentina, 1958), is a multimedia artisti who primarly works with video, installation, drawing and performance. Her work often deals with the lives and stories of social invisibility, and it is closely connected with the context in which it is developed. Her work addresses the idea of insecurity, violence, loneliness, exclusion and the proximity of death as a consequence of gender discrimination. For the prize’s second edition, the artist will develop a project in collaboration with María Us, a Guatemalan-born Kaqchikel Mayan human rights activist.

She lives in Mexico, where she directs IMAN school, La Verdi CDMX, and teaches at Soma. Her work has been internationally exhibited among others at Parque de la Memoria (Buenos Aires); Muac; Jumex Museum (Mexico City); MAMBA (Buenos Aires); 56th Venice Biennale, 29th São Paulo Art Biennale; Whitechapel Gallery (London); and Palais Tokyo (Paris).
