PABLO ATCHUGARRY DONATED MARIPOSA DE LA VIDA TO THE MUNICIPALITY OF MALDONADO
The sculpture Mariposa de la vida (Butterfly of life), created by the Uruguayan sculptor Pablo Atchugarry, was recently delivered to the Municipality of Maldonado; made of stainless steel, the work is 11.8 meters high and weighs approximately 30 tons.
Atchugarry explained that the piece was created in Italy and had its premiere in two concerts of the tenor Andrea Bocelli held in Tuscany, the musician's hometown. The transfer of the work to Uruguay involved seven containers and several weeks of maritime transport. The estimated value of the sculpture is around 2 million dollars, but for Atchugarry, its cultural contribution is what is really important.
The artist dedicated the work to his brother, Alejandro Atchugarry, after whom Route 104 in Maldonado is named, and said: “I hope this butterfly inspires us to make our dreams fly”, highlighting the symbolic significance of the donation.
Miguel Abella, Director of Human Resources of the Municipality, highlighted the arrival of the sculpture as a cultural milestone. According to Abella, the work will help position Punta del Este as a global reference and a new tourist attraction, comparable to the iconic Fingers of Punta del Este.
Atchugarry has worked throughout his career with multiple materials such as clay, cement, iron, wood, marble, among others. Today he lives and works in Lecco (Italy) and Manantiales (Uruguay) where he oversees the development of the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation and the international monumental sculpture park, as well as teaching and promoting art. In 2022, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry, the first and only museum in Uruguay to promote global contemporary art, was inaugurated in Manantiales.
