HABITAT BY LUCIANA LEVINTON. THE SHOW AT MACBA

The exhibition is curated by Georgina Gluzman and covers works by the artist Luciana Levinton made in oil on canvas and oil on paper, acrylic interventions on pages of architecture magazines from the 70s, and large-format murals.

In the many writings of Charlotte Perriand, the creator Levinton investigates in HER series of works, one word recurs: habitat. For Perriand, the habitat should give us calm, relaxation and harmony. The image of a natural or artificial space where an organism can develop also refers to another: that of welcoming an idea and allowing its growth. This operation, that of offering refuge to a fragile memory around the historically ignored feminine creation, is one of the most important concepts that Levinton carries out. With her intense pictorial work, the artist provides that necessary and elusive habitat to imagine new ideas and perceptions from a recovered past.

“Owner of in-depth knowledge of the history of architecture, where the participation of women was ignored, Levinton seeks to give it visibility and for this, she intervenes on pages of publications with images suggested by the creations of architects Charlotte Perriand and other women who have shaped the space. Widely present in specialized magazines from the 1920s to the 1950s, Perriand was gradually erased from historical memory. It is on this ground of oblivion that Levinton builds her feminist memory”, explains Georgina Gluzman.

Luciana Levinton (Buenos Aires, 1977) is a visual artist and architect. She graduated from the University of Architecture, Design and Urbanism (Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2004).

In her work he explores the relationship between pictorial and architectural language. In her paintings she synthesizes architecture through a process of decoding and converts them into abstract forms. Through her work, she recovers the work and the figure of women. Architecture is the main concept for her works. She take plants, sections, facades and architectural spaces, selected as a springboard to paint a journey towards abstraction and mystery.
