Houston Fine Art Fair Goes International in 2013 to Meet Collecting Needs of Houston’s Diverse Population

The third annual Houston Fine Art Fair is a globally driven event from Sept. 19-22, 2013 at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center. Houston is the 4th largest city in America and is well known for its diversity in population, which is reflected in its art collecting trends. This year’s edition features a record-breaking 83 galleries, of which nearly half are from outside the US.

Collectors, curators, art patrons and museum trustees will experience a diverse array of paintings, drawings, print editions, photography, installations and sculptures showcased by galleries traveling in from 14 countries and 18 cities across America. Cuba, Argentina, Korea, UK, Ecuador, Mexico, Italy, France, Colombia, Venezuela, Switzerland and Spain are represented on an international level.

Announcing the Korean Art Pavilion

HFAF and the Galleries Association of Korea have collaborated to create the Korean Art Pavilion featuring 14 notable galleries from Korea, making HFAF one of the most globally reaching art fairs in the US this year. Some of the galleries include Baiksong Gallery, Bon Gallery, Chung-Jark Gallery, Gallery 41, Myunk Gallery and Pyo Gallery.

Showcasing an impressive selection of Latin American art

The Fair will present 33 dealers from South America, Latin America, Mexico, Cuba and Miami showing Latin American art, a genre currently trending in Houston. This representation makes HFAF the largest showcase of Latin American art in the US this year, outside of NYC and Miami. These galleries will be showing works from emerging and established artists with movements ranging from geometric abstraction to cutting-edge contemporary. Collections from 308 Arte Contemporaneo, Aldo de Sousa Gallery, Arevalo Gallery, Ascaso Gallery, Buenos Aires Fine Arts, Cernuda Arte, Collage Habana Gallery, DPM Gallery, Drexel Galeriea, Elite Fine Art Galleries, Galeria Alfredo Ginocchio, Galeria Baobab, Galeria Moro, Galeria Rubbers Internacio, La Casona, Luis Perez Galeria, Now Contemporary Art, Pan American Art Projects, Patricia Conde Galeria, The Americas Collection and Villa Manuela Art Gallery will be on display.

Awards to be presented at HFAF

Houston artist Robert Pruitt will receive the 2013 HFAF Artist of the Year award. Past winners include Donald Sultan and Trenton Doyle Hancock. Pruitt makes drawings and sculptures about the complexity of black identity by comparing and contrasting signs and imagery of Black influences. He layers elements of popular culture including, hip-hop, comic books and Black struggles into portraits of friends and local community members. He is represented by Hooks Epstein Gallery.

Wendy Watriss and Frederick C. Baldwin, FotoFest International founders and senior executives, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Baldwin, a former photographer and educator, founded FotoFest in 1983 and served as president from 1984-2001, and chairman 2001-present. Watriss, a former photographer, reporter and book author, has been FotoFest’s artist director since 1991. FotoFest was the first international Biennial of Photography and photo-related art in America to promote the exchange of art and ideas through international programs.
